Local Information

Coach House Cottages holiday accommodation is well placed for touring in Ireland & making the most of a holiday in this historic and peaceful area of North Tipperary.

The holiday cottages are surrounded with countryside dotted with Abbeys, Castles, Country Houses and Gardens. The north Tipperary village of Lorrha nearby is set in the surrounds of an Ancient Monastic Settlement founded by St. Ruadhan in the sixth century. This important Irish tourist site still boasts some of the finest stone mason skills to be seen in Ireland today. St. Ruadhan's Abbey became the most famous of the Munster monasteries even in St. Ruadhans's time.

The ruin now standing on the site of St. Ruadhan's Church (bottom photo) was built around 1000A.D. and in front of this Church are the remains of two High Crosses dating back to circa 750A.D.

They crosses were vandalised by the Cromwellians but enough is visible to tell us that they were great works of art. These High Crosses are among the oldest in Ireland. Just three miles east of Lorrha village stands Lackeen Castle - one of the oldest O'Kennedy castles. Built in the sixteenth century it is still in remarkable condition and well worth a visit.

Lorrha provides an ideal visiting area where one can draw back the curtains of history and stroll through the ruins in the peace and tranquillity of the centuries gone by. In the area there are pubs and restaurants in abundance which provide traditional music and food for all tastes.

For self-catering guests interested in countryside pursuits there are endless opportunities for bird watching, photography, cycling and walking, Portumna Forest Park which is a 10 minute drive away, has 50km of walking and cycling trails, recently listed in the Sunday Times as one of the 10 best cycling trails in the UK & Ireland. More excellent looped trails are available in the Slieve Bloom mountains which are within easy reach. Detailed walking maps are available for guests.

Horse riding and pony trekking can be enjoyed nearby and for golfers there are several superb courses in the area. Lough Derg offers opportunities for a wide variety of water sports, and fishing (both lake and river) is close by.
